Facebook reminded developers on Monday that the old APIs would be turned off on Tuesday, a plan that had been in the works since last October.

However, Facebook representatives later said a bug in the software, not the company’s APIs, caused the issue.

The bug didn’t affect all apps, and perhaps not even all apps in the same way. For instance, Emoti users that purchased the app and logged into Facebook before Tuesday afternoon were able to use the app just fine. Those that purchased the app after midafternoon on Tuesday found that the app crashed immediately.

Within hours of being alerted to the problem, Facebook engineers tracked down the problem and fixed it.

Diskin confirmed for CNET late Wednesday that Emoti was working again.

Here is my checklist for Activesync so that you can make sure all is well:

You need to make sure that you have Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2 Installed – http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=535BEF85-3096-45F8-AA43-60F1F58B3C40&displaylang=en

Open Up Exchange System Manager – Start, Programs, Microsoft Exchange, System Manager. Expand Servers, Right-Click your server and choose properties. This will display whether you have SP2 installed or not.

If you have installed SP2, check on https://testexchangeconnectivity.com running the Exchange Activesync check. You may need to tick the Ignore Trust for SSL check box if you have a self-signed certificate as these always fail.

Ensure that port 443 is open and forwarded on your firewall to your Exchange server.

Please check and mirror the settings below – Open up IIS and expand the default website then Click on the Directory Security Tab:

Exchange Virtual Directory
· Authentication = Integrated & Basic
· Default Domain = NETBIOS domain name – e.g., yourcompany
· Realm = yourcompany.com
· IP Address Restrictions = Granted Access
· Secure Communications = Require SSL NOT ticked

Microsoft-Server-Activesync Virtual Directory
· Authentication = Basic
· Default Domain = NETBIOS domain name – e.g., yourcompany
· Realm = NETBIOS name
· IP Address Restrictions = Granted Access
· Secure Communications = Require SSL NOT ticked

Then issue IISRESET from Start, Run

Make sure that the name on the certificate that you are using matches the FQDN that you are connecting to e.g., mail.microsoft.com. If it does not match, either re-issue the certificate if you created it yourself, or re-key the certificate from your SSL certificate provider.

Ensure that the IP for the Default Website is set to All Unassigned

Ensure that Forms Based Authentication is NOT turned on under HTTP Virtual Server under Exchange Protocols. If it is read http://support.microsoft.com/kb/817379

ASP.NET should be set to version 1.1 for all virtual directories listed above.

iPhones in China will be relatively expensive, but monthly charges will be among the lowest in the world.

So says the Xinhua News Agency, the official press service of the Chinese Communist government, quoting an unnamed “insider” at China Unicom (CHU).

According the Xinhua report published early Friday, China’s No. 2 carrier will roll out the iPhone shortly after the Oct. 1-8 National Day holiday in four models: 3G 8GB, 3G 16GB, 3GS 16GB, and 3GS 32GB.

The entry-level version, the 8GB iPhone 3G, will cost 2,075 yuan ($303) according to this report — more than three times its U.S. retail price ($99).

But the iPhones in China will be bundled with two-year service packages that are considerably cheaper than AT&T’s (T). According to Xinhua, the lowest-price service package will cost 126 yuan per month, about $18.45. (AT&T charges its U.S. iPhone customers a minimum of $39.99/mos. for voice service plus a mandatory $30/mos. for data.)

Total cost for China Unicom customers over two years: $746. Total cost for AT&T customers: $1,779.

These prices are slightly different than those quoted by China Business Times earlier this week. According to that report, China Unicom had set an “internal launch date” of Oct. 15 for two models: an 8 GB iPhone 3G selling for 1,999 yuan ($293) and a 16 GB iPhone 3G for 2,999 yuan ($439). Both models were said to be offered with 2 year contracts starting at 186 yuan ($27) a month.

China Unicom announced late last month that it had struck a deal with Apple (AAPL) to carry the iPhone in China, beating out giant China Mobile (CHL). China Unicom has 140 million subscribers; China Mobile has nearly three times that many.

“Miruko,” a wearable eyeball-shaped robot with a built-in camera and wi-fi capabilities, is designed to augment human perception by sensing and reacting to objects that cannot be seen with the naked eye.

In this video, Miruko’s creators demonstrate how the robotic eyeball can be used as an interface for a virtual monster-hunting game played in a real-world environment.

Worn on the player’s sleeve, Miruko’s roving eye scans the surroundings in search of virtual monsters that are invisible to the naked human eye. When a virtual monster is spotted, the mechanical eyeball rolls around in its socket and fixes its gaze on the monster’s location. By following Miruko’s line of sight, the player is able to locate the virtual monster and “capture” it via his or her iPhone camera.

Other skills, such as the ability to recognize and track specific faces or objects, suggest the Miruko robotic eyeball interface could be put to use in a variety of navigation, surveillance, and augmented reality entertainment applications.
